The Field Decider

4:22 in the afternoon, the front desk calls: a guest with 800,000 followers wants to check out and be compensated, a burst pipe soaked their suitcase. You tell the new hire give me twelve minutes, and head down. Twenty-seven seconds in the elevator, four moves: bring the guest to your turf not theirs, bring the director not the concierge, prep three offers, apologize no more than twice. Forty-one minutes later the guest leaves with offer two, shaking your hand, and it never reaches social media. Back upstairs you sit down and ask the new hire, where were we, and you genuinely don't remember; those forty-one minutes are already filed and wiped. A noon moon hangs pale in a daytime sky, easy to miss, fully there. Rigel flashes blue-white at Orion's foot, and once it flashes it doesn't linger on the flash just past. Done is filed, and you move. Some things, though, are worth keeping out of the drawer a little longer.
