The Five-Element cycles: generating and overcoming

The five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — relate through two cycles. In the generating cycle (相生) each feeds the next: wood feeds fire, fire makes earth, earth bears metal, metal carries water, water grows wood.

In the overcoming cycle (相剋) each restrains another: wood breaks earth, earth dams water, water quenches fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood. Two of the same element sit in 比和 — alike and steady, sometimes too alike. These 15 pairings read each pair’s base tint and tension.
